How to Manage a Virtual Team

Managing employees who are stationed in remote locations or those who work from home is common for managers in today’s society. Here are some tips for managing virtual teams:

1. Set clear standards of work

Successful virtual teams spend time getting to know each other in a face-to-face setting. An initial face-to-face meeting provides an opportunity to foster a relationship between employees and establish rules on how you will communicate and work collaboratively.

2. Build trust Trust binds the virtual team.

It makes employees feel that they can depend on other team members and will be comfortable asking them for support. Build trust by setting expectations of work standards. When employees are aware of what you expect in terms of quantifiable output, they will understand your criteria for evaluation. This will foster a strong working relationship.

3. Schedule a weekly one-to-one meeting

Ongoing communication is an indication of your engagement with the employee. A weekly one-to-one meeting vis-à-vis a web meeting or phone call allows the manager to check in with the employee on their areas of work, assess if the employee is performing well against the expected work standards and address any underperformance issues.

4. Use technology to your advantage

These employees usually rely on online tools and social media to stay connected with co-workers. Creating a common workspace or online community brings together individuals working from different locations. Such platforms allow users to login, share their experiences and exchange information. They are given a chance to collaborate and connect with their co-workers.
